Easy DIY Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment
At least once a month, I like to treat my damaged/tangle-prone tresses with a super deep conditioning treatment or Easy DIY Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment to get them back to feeling smooth and healthy.
Especially after weekends away like this past one (I really put my hair through the wringer with swimming & heat styling), I always feel the need to give a little extra care to my hair.
The one treatment that I turn to whenever my hair is feeling extra-dry and damaged is my DIY hair conditioner made of only two ingredients: coconut oil and peppermint essential oil.
I discovered this treatment a few years ago after a devastating visit to the salon that left my hair bleached blonde, fragile, and so damaged that it felt like gum when wet and straw when dry.
After that fiasco, I was on a mad hunt for anything that would fix my hair. After chopping off about 3 inches and investing a lot of money in hair care products, I finally discovered an easy & inexpensive DIY treatment that left my hair feeling stronger & smoother.

Why Did I start using this DIY Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment?
I love gorgeous healthy hair.
I mean, who doesn’t – right? But, it seems no matter how much I adore how beautiful healthy hair looks – I just couldn’t seem to maintain it for myself.
Whenever I got my hair to a point of looking healthy or feeling softer, I would then take the plunge and do something drastic to my hair – hence the bleach disaster of 2011.
That bleach disaster changed everything. My hair went from being strong, brunette, shiny, and healthy to a white blonde, damaged, dry, and gummy mess.
It was devastating. And it was even more devastating because for once I was trying to do a lesser-drastic hair change, I simply wanted a few highlights to brighten up my [then] brunette hair for summer. The hairdresser thought by “brighten up” that I meant I wanted to be blonde as can be, and so she left me with bleach on my head and went for her lunch hour – allowing the bleach to sit for far too long.
After what felt like forever, I finally caught the attention of one of the other hairdressers who couldn’t believe that A) I still had bleach on my hair, and B) that the stylist who was supposed to be doing my hair was nowhere to be found. Quite frankly, it’s taken years to remedy the damage of that hair experience.
It was a disaster on every level, and I was heartbroken. I had to cut off far more hair than I wanted (goodbye long hair!) and began my search for products and DIY treatments that would save my now broken and damaged tresses.
It felt like it took forever for me to really discover which products and DIY recipes really worked for me. But, when I finally did my hair was officially saved.
Along with these 7 BEST Hair Masks, I also discovered that hot oil treatments, like this Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment, did wonders for my hair.

Do I use any essential oils in this DIY Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment?
Yes! I typically use peppermint oil in this hair mask. The reason I like to use peppermint oil is that it makes the scalp have a tingly feeling which I think helps increase circulation which means it helps with hair growth.
I’ve always had trouble with growing my hair out long because 1. I have hypothyroidism, and 2. my hair is damaged. So, if I can support my hair growth in a small way (like with hot oil treatments and peppermint oil), I will.

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment for Healthy Hair
This Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment is great for damaged or dry hair types. Use this and then rinse your hair out twice to reveal soft silky hair.
Ingredients
- Two bowls
- coconut oil
- peppermint and/or lavender essential oil (if you're not a peppermint fan then go ahead and substitute it with a different essential oil!). I personally love how the peppermint makes my scalp feel somewhat cool/tingly but if you're looking for something more soothing then go with the lavender oil. Only use a few drops.
- a scrunchy or shower cap
Instructions
- With a large spoon, scoop out three spoonfuls of coconut oil. Put two of the spoonfuls in one bowl (let’s call it bowl 1), and one spoonful in the other (bowl 2).
- In bowl 2 add in 5-8 drops of peppermint extract.
- Heat bowl two in the microwave for a few seconds just to melt the coconut oil. Ensure the oil isn’t too hot, you don’t want to burn yourself! Apply this oil onto your scalp and massage it into the roots. Make sure you only apply the peppermint mixture to your roots as peppermint can be drying, and you don't want to dry out your ends!
- Now heat bowl 1 and again, test the temperature to ensure you don’t burn yourself & your hair. Apply this oil now to your hairs ends.
- Take your hair and spiral it up into a bun. I use a scrunchy to hold my hair up as its non-damaging, unlike most hair ties. You can also use a shower cap to keep the oily ends off your face and clothing.
- Keep the oil in your hair for as long as possible, even overnight if you can. Typically I keep this treatment in for two hours.
- Rinse out with hot water at first to melt the oil out of your hair and then wash twice with shampoo. I find rinsing it twice with the shampoo rather than once helps to ensure you aren’t left with greasy oily hair.
- For some added health, let your hair air dry!
