Summer Beauty Essentials: Skincare and Makeup

Though I’ve always considered myself a total “summer girl”, sometimes the summertime beauty aspect of the sunshiny season can be quite a challenge. Between the sunscreen slick skin, dried out tresses and painful sunburns – summer can end up feeling like a season filled with obstacles more than joys. If you’re looking to step up your beauty routine this summer to beat the heat, then continue reading my top Summer Beauty Essentials: Skincare and Makeup.

Summer Beauty Essentials: Skincare, Makeup, and Haircare

Skincare:

You can now invest in powders that also have sun protection within them. Powder sunscreens are a great option if you find cream or spray sunscreens leave your skin feeling oily or tacky. One of my favourite cream sunscreens though is from La Roche Posay. La Roche Posay sunscreen is a very thin cream (nearly liquid) sunscreen that does leave a slight residual oil but is a great option if you have fairly sensitive skin. I only use the La Roche Posay sunscreen lotion for my face as that’s where my skin is most sensitive and for my body, I used Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Lotion Sunscreen in SPF 30. I really like this body sunscreen as I find it isn’t oily and it absorbs in nicely. With sunscreen put aside, finding a great skin cleanser is also very important for summer beauty. At the end of the day, you want to be able to remove your sunscreen and leave your skin feeling fresh and clean.

Makeup:

To me, summer beauty always comes down to looking natural. I always am drawn to looks that are a bit more bronzed & sunkissed so typically I invest in a great golden toned eye-shadow (like “goldmine“ from MAC – recently used here), my favourite Hoola bronzer by Benefit, a champagne/gold highlighter, a coral-copper blush, and a rich chocolate brown eyeliner. Mascara is often what most people consider their “desert island must-have”. During the summertime, it seems everyone goes for waterproof so that they really don’t have to give up their beauty staple. Since I am not a huge fan of waterproof mascaras though, I always just stick to normal mascara, or if I am heading to the beach or a pool then I’ll forgo mascara completely. For me, waterproof mascara just isn’t worth it. I always find that removing it is too tough and I end up tearing out lashes – which is the last thing I want to do when I am going through my night time skincare routine.
For lips, I always find myself reaching for my Fresh Sugar lip-balm in Petal. Petal is a refreshing pink tone that really can be worn year-round. I would definitely consider this tinted lip-balm one of my “holy grail” items. Since I am fairly against laying out & baking on the beach (skin cancer terrifies me!) but I love the look of a glowy tan, I also believe in investing in a great gradual tanner. I’ve tried a few self-tanners but my favourite has been St.Tropez gradual tanner & tinted facial moisturizer.

HAIR:

My hair-care routine rarely changes, but during the summer season, I always amp up my conditioning treatments to fight off the damage from the sun, ocean water & heat tool styling.  I’ve listed a few of the best deep conditioning hair masks for dry hair here.  Beach waves are all the rage during the summer months which is why either making your own sea salt spray, or buying one, is a great way to get those beachy waves even when you’re not at the beach!

I can't live without fake tans during summer (or winter) since I am so pale and can never brown naturally. I do love me some St Tropez!
